Get a Coyote v8 lol. I’m sure they are becoming available outside of crate engines.

5.4 4V Navigator motor.

If you’re patient, you can probably pick one up cheap outside a Cars & Coffee.

You can make it sound the same but can you make it drive as good or better?

Was that available in the Aviator too?

Aviator was a 4.6 4V.

5.4 4V Navigator swap. Cheaper, and not nearly as much of an EMS PITA as the Coyote.

The 4V power and potential is nice, too.

I used to own this one... ‘98 B-head 32v 4.6. It had the obligatory Flowmasters and catless H-pipe... the noise was soooooooooooo heavenly. I only had it for about 6 months, sadly. In that time I did a lot of work to in and road tripped it from Fl to MN to TX and back to FL. Even with 4.10s it knocked down 24 mpg on the freeway all day long. I wish I would have kept it, but wife hated it and needed a back-up car when I was leaving on a deployment (I didn’t trust her car because Mark 4 Jetta), so it got traded.

I’ve always thought they sounded a little trashy myself, especially the idle. But holy crap, up in the rev’s that thing sounds fantastic. I support it, but only if it can always be turning at least 4 grand.

I only really need 300 in this application, and the 5.4 4v has 70 more lb-ft straight out the gate than the 4.6 4v. Also, the 5.4 4v looks more “oem” than the Coyote so emissions inspectors are less likely to do a double-take on the visual test. Although I’d have to gently work a small bulge into the hood, it would work. I’d need to source a Marauder intake manifold to swap in a 4.6 4v anyways, since the throttle body faces the wrong way on Mark 8s.

The only thing better than a 4v in a Panther is a 5.4 4v and a 5 speed in a Panther.

That’s a beautiful car. Enough little things to make it fun, but no obnoxious fake vents and goofy shit. Shame you had to trade it.

Unfortunately, I met the trailer trash moron who bought it three owners after me... he was really proud of his 22" chrome rims (missing the center caps because of course they were) and the GIANT stick-on Cobra on the hood. I suppose it was destined for such a fate, the paint was pretty bad, the sheet metal had a lot of imperfections, and it had a branded title since it had 280 miles on the odometer in October 1998.

The Mod Box! Love that thing. Also, who in their right mind would go to the trouble of swapping in a 5.4 4v and saying “I think the 4R70W is good enough.” BTW, how badly would I have to section and tweak the hood to get the factory Navigator manifold to fit?

You would have to cut a giant hole in the hood to fir the Navi intake. Why would you want to though? That intake is only good for trucks. You end up with no usable power for a car.

Cost and not waiting on parts from Australia. Since it would be going in an 03+ P71, the plan would be to take the factory hood, slice along each character line, bend to fit, and then weld in new metal to give it a cowl-style hood that fits like OEM.

The scoop would be nearly as tall as the windshield.

I might have to slice and dice the upper manifold so I can fab up a box plenum, then.

It’s a bit showy, but a real possibility.
